Dow Corning 732 RTV Silicone: What I Use When It Has to Work by Tomorrow

If you need silicone under a deadline, the fastest answer is usually Dow Corning 732 RTV silicone. In eight years of coordinating emergency material orders, I've handled more than 200 rush jobs, and 732 is the product I reach for when a client says 'it has to work by tomorrow.' It's one-part, cures at room temperature, and comes in clear—which is basically what people mean when they ask for Dow Corning clear silicone. But not every urgent job needs silicone. Anyone who tells you one is universally better is selling a single-material worldview.

There's also a fundamental difference worth remembering. TPU is a thermoplastic—it can be heat-welded and reshaped. Silicone is a thermoset; once cured, you can't melt it down. That affects repairs, splicing, and what a fabricator can do with it. If you need a continuous loop, TPU has a structural advantage. If you need to hold up under a hot exhaust, silicone has the advantage.

What was best practice in 2020 may not apply in 2025. TPU grades have improved. Some are now rated for continuous service at temperatures that used to disqualify them. But the fundamentals haven't changed: silicone still wins on wide-temperature flexibility and long-term sealing; TPU still wins on mechanical toughness and wear. The right answer is based on conditions, not trends.

When a Rubber Strip Shop Makes More Sense

Now, when do I call a rubber strip shop instead? When the job doesn't need silicone at all. If you need a continuous length of edge trim or a weather seal, a dedicated rubber strip shop can usually get you an EPDM or nitrile strip faster than a custom silicone extrusion. Ask the shop two questions: durometer (Shore A) and max service temperature. A soft 60 Shore A strip may seal better than a hard 80. And a 'rubber strip' made of nitrile will fail around oil—silicone won't, but silicone also won't have the same tear resistance. Match the strip to the chemistry.

Some rubber strip shops do silicone too. If they say 'we only do EPDM,' ask for a referral. Don't force a wrong material just to save one phone call. That's how you end up with a strip that looks right and fails in three months.

Is a rubber strip shop better than buying from a big materials supplier? Depends on what 'better' means. If you need one piece, tomorrow, a shop that stocks off-the-shelf profiles is the answer. If you need a hundred identical parts with a specific compound, go to the supplier with a spec sheet. Simple.

The Boundary Cases No One Mentions

And for the search term I didn't plan for: where to buy foam board insulation. If that's why you're here, the quick answer is a hardware store or building supply yard. Foam board is not silicone, and no amount of sealant will fix a thermal envelope problem. Don't caulk the gap and call it insulated. Buy the board.

The boundaries matter more than the checklist. Don't use 732 RTV for structural glazing, continuous chemical immersion, or food-contact applications unless the specific product and cure conditions are documented. 'RTV' means room-temperature vulcanizing, not 'guaranteed forever.' Sealants are part of a system; substrate prep and joint design decide whether it works. The product is good, but the setup determines whether it's good enough.

So, bottom line: For a fast, reliable bond that has to survive vibration and temperature swings, Dow Corning 732 RTV silicone is my default. Use clear if appearance is secondary. Use TPU when you need toughness and a lower coefficient of friction. Use a rubber strip shop when the shape is simple and the chemistry is known. And if you need foam board, head to the lumber aisle. Done.
