If you've searched is nitrile rubber heat resistant or semitool o-ring viton, you're probably weighing an OEM rebuild kit against something cheaper. I've stood on both sides of that purchase order.
I handle procurement for a 40-person maintenance and retrofit shop that works on older semiconductor wet processing tools. I manage a roughly $180,000 annual consumables budget, so material substitutions are not a theoretical exercise for me. This comparison is based on my own purchase history and maintenance logs since 2019, not on a chemistry degree. If your OEM manual specifies a material, that spec wins.
What surprised me when I audited our 2024 seal spend wasn't the material science. It was that a small tube of Dow Corning silicone compound and a bottle of Dow Corning silicone fluids changed our maintenance cost more than the per-o-ring price tag did.
What the comparison actually looked like
The leak-prone process module in our case runs heated DI water, an ozone-containing rinse, and a dilute acid/solvent step. The OEM calls for Viton, a trade name for FKM fluoroelastomers. A local parts supplier offered an "equivalent" kit in nitrile, or Buna-N, at less than one-third of the price.
I wanted to believe the cheaper kit. The numbers were compelling: $86 for the generic nitrile kit versus $417 for the OEM Viton kit. As a cost controller, I've approved worse bets. Then the tool leaked a second time after the first generic replacement, and I had to stop looking only at the unit price.
Heat resistance: does the question even matter here?
Nitrile rubber is heat resistant. It's heat resistant to a specific point. Most NBR compounds have a continuous service range around -30°C to 100°C, with some blends rated higher in hot oil. Compared with natural rubber, that's genuinely useful. Compared with what our wet process needed after considering chemical exposure, it wasn't good enough.
Parker's O-Ring Handbook, the reference I go to when reading supplier charts, lists FKM/Viton around -20°C to 200°C for many compounds, and silicone around -60°C to 230°C. If you ranked these three on heat alone, silicone would win, Viton would place, and nitrile would come in third.
So yes, nitrile rubber is heat resistant in any ordinary conversation. But our tool didn't fail because the rubber hit a temperature limit. It failed because the rubber could not hold up in the chemical environment around it. That's the part that changes the buying decision.
Chemical compatibility was the dimension that changed the decision
Nitrile is a workhorse in petroleum oil, hydraulic fluid, and grease. That's why it's on every cheap oily seal you've ever seen. It is far less happy in ozone, hot oxidizing chemistries, and many solvents. Our process train simply wasn't the kind of environment Buna-N was designed to survive.
Viton/FKM exists for applications with heat and chemistry at the same time. It is not indestructible, but its resistance to ozone, mineral acids, and a broad range of organic chemicals is why semiconductor wet tools have specified it for decades.
Silicone rubber is the curveball. Its temperature range is impressive and its weather resistance is excellent. But it has limited resistance to petroleum oils, many solvents, and certain concentrated acids, and it is mechanically softer than Viton. A silicone o-ring may be perfect in a freezer door and wrong in a wet chemistry manifold.
Material selection in a wet tool is a chemistry problem before it is a heat problem.
That was the first surprise on this comparison list.
The installation dimension: dry seals vs lubricated seals
Here is where the Dow Corning silicone compound and Dow Corning silicone fluids ended up in our parts room.
The cheapest installation is dry installation: grab an o-ring, seat it, close it up. No lubricant cost, no extra cleanup. It can work. In clean, low-risk assemblies, dry is perfectly fine. But in our manifold, dry installation caused rolled and pinched seals more often than any of us wanted to admit.
The other end of the spectrum is grabbing whatever grease happens to be in the toolbox. That is also a false economy. Petroleum-based greases can swell, harden, or degrade some rubbers. You don't want a universal grease when you're counting on a Viton seal to survive an aggressive process.
We settled on a tube of Dow Corning silicone compound for most rebuilds. It is thick enough to stay in the groove during assembly. When we need a lighter film, especially on longer seals where excess compound could collect particles, we use a Dow Corning silicone fluid instead.
From a cost perspective, this looks like an unnecessary line item. The tube costs more than generic hardware-store grease. But when I compared actual spend, failed dry-installed rebuilds with overtime calls added up to more than a case of the proper silicone compound. Lubricated installation adds maybe three minutes per seal and a few cents of material. That tradeoff is the entire argument.
What about the black HDPE parts in the same order?
A separate line in the same audit was black HDPE. It is worth naming because many buyers mix it into the same polymer conversation as rubber, and that is not useful.
High-density polyethylene is a rigid thermoplastic. We use it for covers, tank details, spacers, and guards. Black HDPE often includes carbon black, which helps it survive UV exposure outdoors. The black color does not make it a chemical-resistant high-heat material, and HDPE does not act like an elastomer. Compress it and it does not spring back the way an o-ring must.
So when you're searching hdpe black, compare it against other rigid plastics, not against nitrile or Viton. If you're seeing leaks where HDPE meets another component, the problem is likely a weld, a gasket, or a design issue, not a case of the plastic needing to behave like rubber.
Which one I order now
After that audit, our rebuild cart follows a simple guide:
- Nitrile/Buna-N: still our choice for oil, hydraulic, and moderate-temperature dry service where the chemical exposure is known and friendly.
- Viton/FKM: the default for process-wetted seals, especially when heat and chemistry are both in the picture and the OEM specified it.
- Silicone rubber: chosen when the task is extreme temperature, ozone, weather, or dry service, not for petroleum or solvent exposure.
- Dow Corning silicone compound or fluid: used as an installation aid on o-rings, not as a substitute for correct material selection.

The generic nitrile kit cost 79% less on paper but gave us repeated downtime. The correct Viton spec wasn't the PO that looked cheapest; it was the one that minimized total cost per leak-free week.
One caveat: this is one shop's experience with one family of wet process equipment. Your chemistries, temperatures, and assembly practices may sit on the edge of a material's compatibility chart. Verify current specifications before you buy.
