After about 200 orders and five years of buying for a 190-person specialty manufacturing plant, here is my direct answer: Dow Corning products are worth specifying in roughly 7 out of 10 situations that call for silicone. In the other 3, another material is a better fit, and in a handful of cases a generic version does just as well. The hard part is knowing which situation you are in before you call a supplier.
I should be clear about my role. I am not an engineer or a chemist. I am the office administrator who handles purchasing for a 190-person specialty manufacturing company. I manage 60 to 80 material orders a year and report to both operations and finance. That means I spend a lot of time translating requests like need silicone, order it into actual line items that do not end up as a problem later.

Yes. Silicone is a polymer. In technical terms, it is a synthetic polymer with a silicon-oxygen backbone and organic groups attached to the silicon atoms. The most common version is polydimethylsiloxane. But this answer creates false confidence. Silicone is not a single material. It is a family of materials that can be a liquid, grease, cured elastomer, or a coating. For purchasing, the useful answer is: know which part of the silicone family your application actually needs.
Why I still search dow-corning before most silicone orders
Silicone on a bucket is not enough detail. One of the reasons I search the old brand name is because engineers wrote product numbers into drawings decades ago. Dow Corning is now part of Dow Inc. and many of the current product names appear as DOWSIL, but old specs still say Dow Corning. When a contractor asks for Dow Corning products, they are referencing predictable chemistry, a published data sheet, and accountability. That matters when a sealant failure means glass or metal has to be redone.
What I have learned about Dow Corning 995 silicone structural sealant
The most common branded product on our repair worksheets is Dow Corning 995 silicone structural sealant. It is now sold as DOWSIL 995, or rather, the current version carries that name while old drawings still say Dow Corning. The product is a one-part, neutral-curing silicone used for structural glazing, where glass is bonded to the frame rather than simply held in place and caulked. I will not quote test results because I am not a lab. If an application is truly structural, the engineer should be referencing standards like ASTM C1184 for structural silicone sealants. My job is to order the product on the engineer's approved list.
Here is something vendors do not tell you about brand specifications: they are frequently about liability, not loyalty. If a contractor substitutes a no-name product without written approval, responsibility for a failed bond can shift from the manufacturer and engineer to the person who bought the substitute. When I see that risk, I buy the named product.
Coating PTFE and the release-agent trap
My own search history includes the phrase coating ptfe, and it turned out to be a trap. PTFE is a fluoropolymer, not a silicone. Both are used for release coatings and both are slippery, but they cure differently and tolerate different temperatures. When a production supervisor asked for coating PTFE, I brought in a PTFE spray. What they needed was a heat-cure silicone release coating. The part number was wrong, the line stopped briefly, and I learned to ask two more questions before ordering: What is the substrate? and What solvent and temperature are involved?

If you order by color, you deserve the problem you get. Check dimensions first.
But dimensions are only the second half. Material selection is the first. A silicone O-ring is not automatically better for every job. Silicone handles high heat and weathering well, but in oil or fuel service, a fluorocarbon material often outlasts it. Before I buy, I confirm the Shore A durometer and the polymer type. A cheap substitute that matches the o-ring dimensions chart but not the chemistry can cost more than any price savings.
A few years ago, we had no formal substitution-checking process. A vendor offered me a good price on a box of O-rings with the right dash number. I did not check the material. My honest boundaries: when I will substitute
Look, I am not saying generic materials are defective. I am saying I do not want to answer questions after a failure. If the application is indoors, non-structural, low-stress, and the alternative material has a published technical data sheet, I am willing to substitute. I have used economy RTV silicone for non-critical seals and it worked fine. I would not use it for a curtain wall or a process line where failure creates product loss or safety risk.
So yes, silicone is a polymer. But it is not one material, and a brand-name product is not always the right material. It is the right material when the cost of getting it wrong is high. My final question for any material request is the same every time: what does failure cost? If the answer is nothing, save the money. If the answer involves glass, product liability, or process equipment, buy the documented material.
