Is Polyurethane Silicone? A Buyer's Guide to the Mix-Up That Costs Money

I'm an office administrator for a 280-person manufacturing company. I manage the purchasing side of facilities and prototype parts—roughly $1.3 million a year across 9 vendors. I report to operations and finance, and I'm definitely not a chemist. Back in 2020, when I took over purchasing, I thought this job was mostly about price. I was wrong. The part that actually costs us money is usually the seven words after "It's basically the same material."

The Surface Problem: A Batch of "Silicone" That Wasn't

We ordered O-rings for a Dow Corning silicone automotive spec. The part number and drawing looked right. The vendor sent a material labeled "silicone rubber." But the package didn't show the Dow Corning logo, and the datasheet didn't match the Silastic grade we specified. I didn't push back (which, honestly, still bugs me). Three weeks later, the seals were swollen, and the test rig was leaking.

By the time we traced it, we had lost a week of lab time. The replacement order cost more than the original batch because we had to expedite it. And the original supplier vanished when asked for a certificate of analysis.

The Deep Cause: "Silicone" Is a Family, Not One Material

Here's the thing: silicone is a group of materials, not one formula. The word "silicone" can mean a tiny liquid, a soft gel, a high-strength rubber, a sealant, or a medical-grade dispersion. Hardness, tensile strength, tear strength, compression set, heat aging, and cure chemistry all vary. A Dow Corning silicone designed for automotive sealing has different requirements than a silicone for a consumer product. If you buy "silicone" without a product number, you are basically rolling dice.

One question I hear all the time: is polyurethane silicone? No. Polyurethane (PU, often sold as TPU) is a completely different polymer. It's tough, abrasion-resistant, and useful for hoses, films, and covers. But it isn't silicone, and it doesn't behave like silicone. It can feel similar in hand. It doesn't have the same temperature resistance or chemical behavior. I'm not saying polyurethane is bad. It's a great material in the right place. But "great material" and "the material on the drawing" are two different things.

The same confusion happens in medical and personal-care products. A product like the silicone fleshlight category is a good example—not my usual purchase, but I ended up researching it after a client asked. People choose silicone there because it's easy to clean, doesn't hold odors, and can be formulated to be body-safe. If someone substitutes a cheaper TPE or a polyurethane compound and still calls it "silicone," the cleaning and safety profile changes. That is not a small detail.

And then there's PVC. PVC medical tubing is common—clear, flexible, and cost-effective. But PVC is also not silicone. It has plasticizers to stay soft, and its heat resistance and extractable profile are different. In some medical applications, PVC is perfectly fine. In others, a medical-grade silicone is specified for a reason. The label needs to match the test data.

The Real Cost: Not Just the Batch Price

People think the risk is the difference between cheap and expensive silicone. Actually, the risk is a line stoppage, a failed audit, or a recalled product. When our O-rings failed, we paid $400 for rush delivery of the correct material. That $400 was annoying. The alternative was delaying a $15,000 client demo. Once I put it that way, the "extra" cost was just the price of certainty.

I still kick myself for accepting a verbal "you won't need a cert" from a different supplier. If I'd documented the material requirement in the PO, we would have had grounds to reject the batch immediately. Instead, we spent two weeks arguing and then paid for a lab test anyway.

Honestly, I'm not sure why some suppliers mislabel materials. My best guess is a mix of ignorance and marketing: a salesperson feels a rubbery part and assumes it's silicone. If the customer asks, they say yes. A bad habit does not make a material spec.

How We Fixed Our Sourcing

We didn't fire the vendor immediately—we changed the process. Now I do four things:

  • Buy from a traceable source. For Dow Corning silicone automotive parts and industrial products, I look for the Dow Corning logo and a specific product number. If the supplier can't show both, I don't order.
  • Demand the data sheet before the PO. "Medical-grade," "high-temp," and "body-safe" are just words.
    Per FTC guidelines (ftc.gov), claims have to be truthful, not misleading, and substantiated.
    So ask for the test data.
  • Run a small sample before a big order. A quick hardness check or a burn test won't tell you everything, but it catches the obvious substitutions.
  • Confirm in writing. One email from the supplier saying "this is the exact Dow Corning Silastic grade you specified" has saved us more than once.

A few weeks ago, a new vendor told me, "We have a silicone that's basically the same as that polyurethane." I didn't send them a check. I sent back a one-line question: Is polyurethane silicone? They corrected the quote to "polyurethane." That's when it became safe to continue the conversation.

After five years of managing these relationships, the difference between a bad supplier and a good one often comes down to whether they can tell you exactly what they're shipping. The price matters, but the material spec matters more. If you're buying silicone for automotive, medical, or personal-care products, make the source, the product number, and the data sheet your non-negotiables. The extra time you spend verifying is cheaper than the time you'll lose replacing something that was "basically the same."
