Sourcing Dow Corning Silicone Products: A 7-Step Buyer’s Checklist

I’m the office administrator who handles purchasing for a 400-person company—roughly $60,000 a year across maintenance, office supplies, and safety equipment. I report to operations and finance, so I see both the requested spec and the budget. And no, I’m not a materials engineer. I’m the person who gets asked to source “dow-corning” silicone, then makes sure it arrives on time.

If that sounds like your job, this checklist is for you. It’s a practical list of the seven checks I run before ordering any Dow Corning silicone product. It’s not a substitute for engineering judgment. But it will probably save you from the mistake I made in 2020, when I bought “silicone” without checking the application and ended up with a box of parts that did not fit the job. (Ugh.)

1. Start with the service conditions, not the product name

The biggest trap is searching by shape instead of by application. When someone searches for “rubber bong” or asks for a “drain plug o-ring,” they’re giving you geometry, not material. Silicone, TPU, nitrile, and natural rubber can all be made into those shapes. They perform very differently.

Before you order, get four answers:

  1. What temperature will the part see?
  2. What fluids or chemicals will it touch?
  3. Will it be in constant motion or static?
  4. What hardness (durometer) do you need?

The search “tpu silicone vs silicone” is a classic example. People want a clear winner. The honest answer is: it depends on the application. In my opinion, silicone often wins when you need high-heat resistance, flexibility at low temperatures, and weathering resistance. TPU is usually tougher and handles oil and abrasion better. Here’s what I do now:

  • Start from the authorized distributor list on the official Dow website.
  • Ignore listings that say “equivalent” or “compatible with Dow Corning.”
  • Ask for a certificate of analysis or lot number for large orders.

The Dow Corning logo on a package is a good first check. But the logo means nothing if the supply chain behind it is unverified. If you can’t confirm the seller’s authorization, move on.

3. Choose the right Dow Corning silicone sealant chemistry

Dow Corning silicone sealants are not one product. You need to know whether the sealant is acid-cure or neutral-cure. Acid-cure sealants often smell like vinegar and work fine for many general uses, but they can corrode sensitive metals or electronics. Neutral-cure sealants are usually the safer starting point.

One thing I learned in 2024: the Dow Corning brand is now part of the Dow silicone portfolio. Many former Dow Corning products have been renamed—for example, Dow Corning 795 became DOWSIL 795. I’m not 100% sure of every current product number, so check the current data sheet. For a drain plug o-ring or any molded silicone part, a size name is not enough. You need inside diameter, outside diameter, cross-section, and hardness. If the purchasing request only says “the big one from the original kit,” you will probably order the wrong part.

I’d argue that durometer is the most overlooked spec. Durometer—measured by ASTM D2240—tells you if the part is soft like a rubber band or firm like a tire tread. A 60 Shore A silicone feels very different from an 80 Shore A version, even if the chemistry is the same.

For engineered parts, ask for the ASTM D2000 line callout if you can. That standard classifies rubber materials by type, class, hardness, and temperature resistance. It gives you a documentation trail that the word “silicone” alone never will.

5. Request technical data before you approve the PO

Any reputable supplier should send you a technical data sheet (TDS) and safety data sheet (SDS) before you order. If they hesitate, that’s a red flag.

What I look for on the TDS:

  • Durometer (hardness)
  • Tensile and tear strength
  • Temperature range
  • Cure time and method, for sealants
  • Color options and limitations

One legitimate caveat: a TDS is a snapshot of a test sample. It does not guarantee every batch is identical. For mission-critical parts, ask for lot-specific certification. It costs more, but it’s cheaper than a failed batch.

6. Compare total cost, not just per-unit price

This is where my admin side kicks in. I’ve had vendors look great on unit price and then add minimum-order fees, split-shipment charges, or hazardous-material surcharges that wiped out the savings. The cheapest sealant in the catalog is not the cheapest sealant delivered.

When comparing quotes, I calculate:

  • Unit price plus shipping
  • Minimum order and restocking terms
  • Lead time—expedited shipping changes the math
  • Payment terms: net 30 vs. prepay is a real difference

Personally, I’m willing to pay a little more for a distributor who answers emails and can tell me the batch code on a pallet. That saved us during a 2024 project when we had to trace every material on site.

This worked for us, but we have predictable ordering patterns. If you’re a seasonal business with demand spikes, the calculus might be different.

7. Audit the packaging and batch codes on delivery

The step most buyers overlook—including me, once—is the receiving audit. You can do all the sourcing legwork and then have an unlabeled box delivered. The product that sits in a back room for two years before someone opens it isn’t “stock”; it’s a liability.

When a Dow Corning silicone order arrives, I check:

  • Official Dow Corning logo and branding on the package
  • Batch or lot number printed on the product itself
  • Manufacturing date and shelf-life date, if shown
  • Sealed packaging, with no cracked tubes or dented cartridges

If the package shows a Dow Corning logo but the batch code is missing, I return it. That’s a rule I borrowed from our quality manager. She would rather reorder than risk an unverifiable batch.
